Designing Stiff-Relief

Body stiffness is an everyday issue for students, professionals, and remote workers who spend long hours sitting. Although many fitness and yoga apps exist, they often feel overwhelming or time-consuming for beginners. Stiff-Relief makes stretching simple, personalized, and rewarding while also exploring product strategy and pretotyping before development.

The Problem

Modern lifestyles encourage prolonged sitting and recurring discomfort across the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Research surfaced three recurring challenges: people know stretching helps but rarely make time for it; existing fitness apps assume prior knowledge; and progress is difficult to measure, reducing motivation to continue.

Objectives & Research

The project aimed to create an intuitive beginner experience, encourage long-term habit formation through motivation and rewards, help users understand stiffness patterns, and validate whether the product solved a meaningful problem. Competitive analysis of StretchIt and Daily Yoga showed a market focused on fitness progression, with less attention to everyday stiffness or beginner-friendly relief.

Key insights

Interviews with students and professionals revealed frequent neck and back stiffness after long work sessions, low motivation for consistent stretching, and difficulty finding sessions suited to specific body areas. People preferred routines under 20 minutes, simplicity over advanced customization, visual progress and rewards, and relief rather than intense exercise.

Defining the Solution

Stiff-Relief is a mobile application built around four pillars: personalized routines, daily habit formation, progress tracking, and reward-driven engagement. It provides beginner-friendly, body-focused sessions; stiffness tracking; progress visualization; and Stiff-Coins that reward consistent participation.

Business Thinking & Architecture

Beyond the interface, the project included a Value Proposition Canvas, Business Model Canvas, competitive SWOT analysis, OKRs, and a monetization strategy to connect customer needs with viability. The information architecture reduced cognitive load through five primary areas: Home, Body Flows, Rewards, Progress, and Profile.

Design Process & Features

The interface progressed through low- and mid-fidelity wireframes into a high-fidelity design defined by calmness, clarity, warm neutral colors, rounded cards, large typography, accessible interaction patterns, and clear progress indicators. Core features include guided daily routines, personalized body flows, stiffness tracking, a Stiff-Coin reward system, and a progress dashboard.

Testing & Iterations

Moderated usability sessions covered notifications, onboarding, guided routines, stiffness logging, reward redemption, and progress review. Participants appreciated the clean visual design, beginner-friendly onboarding, rewards, session progression, and overall simplicity. Testing also revealed that Custom Body Flow was unclear, body-specific sessions required too much searching, and statistics needed deeper insights. Planned improvements include clearer terminology, better routine discoverability, richer trend visualization, and more visible navigation.

Pretotyping the Product

Three key risks were tested before development: whether users care enough about stiffness to adopt an app, whether they will log stiffness consistently, and whether a freemium model can convert. A Fake Front Door landing page generated 20 unique visitors, 21 sessions, and 12 waitlist sign-ups—a 60% signup rate suggesting meaningful early demand. A Typeform simulation tested willingness to log stiffness and produced early behavioral insight without building backend functionality.

Impact, Reflection & Next Steps

Stiff-Relief strengthened my ability to design an end-to-end wellness product, conduct research and moderated testing, translate findings into improvements, and validate assumptions through early experimentation. It shifted my perspective from designing screens to designing a product. Future opportunities include AI-powered recommendations from stiffness history, wearable integration, adaptive routines, community challenges, premium coaching, and expert-led wellness programs. Great design is not only about beautiful interfaces—it reduces uncertainty, validates ideas early, and creates meaningful value for users and businesses.
